Welcome

My first love will always be for the moorland landscapes of Northern England, particularly those in my native North West and Cumbria. I am an ardent walker in all weathers and I aim to capture in my sketch book those special moments that all of us walkers chance upon. I usually sketch in either charcoal or watercolour, and my sketches later form the basis of studio works in watercolour or mixed media. Quite often, I actually like the original sketch best. Lynne

The first overnight frost up on the hill. I somehow lost Scout Road and most of the A675. It was the cold morning after a very cold night. Brrrrr...

You might well say “No way! Great Mell Fell is much further away than that from Castlerigg” but I assure you it wasn’t.

And it appears just as prominent from many other viewpoints in all directions around it.

Colours of Autumn, a painting by lynne frost artist

Colours of Autumn
Image 17cm x 17cm
Framed 39cm x 39cm
Acrylic
SOLD

Every now and then at any time of year, Mother Nature will suddenly light up your daily humdrum with an amazing palette of colours. And you just walk on past as though it will still be there tomorrow. But you will never see the same place like that ever again.

Of course, all dog walkers are accustomed to this and we just wait for the next miracle tomorrow evening.

The Copse in Autumn, a painting by lynne frost artist

The Copse in Autumn
Image 17cm x 17cm
Framed 39cm x 39cm
Acrylic
£180

That scruffy old stand of (maybe six?) raggedy trees that grew up in the old garden after demolition of the old house. It will never win a beauty competition and we all duck and weave through it without really noticing. But if you mention “the copse” to anyone at all, as part of directions, say, they will immediately say “yes”. They have quietly become a landmark in our time.

Towards the Moor, a painting by lynne frost artist

Towards the Moor
Image 28cm x 28cm
Framed 51cm x 51cm
Acrylic
SOLD

This caught my eye as so often because of that interesting contrast of the clear light which is in front of you and the subtle shades of the light beyond. They go so well together and I never get tired of it.

Stubble Field, a painting by lynne frost artist

Stubble Field
Image 36cm x 36cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm
Acrylic
£390

I painted this from a super photograph shown to me by a fellow artist. The crop had just been harvested, revealing the bare bones of the year. I had one of my Van Gogh moments and was so tempted to add in a few black crows..

Ingleborough, a painting by lynne frost artist

Ingleborough
Image 36cm x 36cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm
Acrylic
SOLD

People often use the word “Lordly” in respect of a high mountain standing aloof from the valley. And Ingleborough is surely the all-time classic example here in the Yorkshire Dales.

And of course even more so when it catches the first snows of winter approaching.

Wonderland, a painting by lynne frost artist

Wonderland
Image 28cm x 28cm
Framed 51cm x 51cm

What is it about an unexpected snowfall which brings out our inner child ? It must be because of the sheer wonder of that very first snowfall we ever saw.

Only pawprints so far today, here on the Dogs Field.

Solway never ceases to inspire me.

It is never the same place from one mouthful of sandwich to the next. So you have to be quick.

Salt Marsh

Framed 51cm x 51cm

So I went out with a Penrith Art Circle group, headed by Jamie Oldham, an inspirational artist and always generous with his sound advice. And of course, I will seize any excuse to be on Solway.

We all had a lovely time gazing out across the salt marsh and catching glimpses of sunlight reflecting from the estuary waves.

Buttercups, a painting by lynne frost artist

Buttercups
Image 25cm x 25cm
Framed 46cm x 46cm
Acrylic

You can’t argue with Buttercup yellow and buttercups made a great show this year. They appeared bang on time and then just didn’t want to leave for ages. This was quite late on in the year but the stragglers were still enjoying their time in the sun.

Midnight - painting by lynne frost artist

Snowbound
Image 32cm x 32cm
Framed 60cm x 60cm

Down in the valley from Winter Hill. I have painted this farm many times before. Only this time it was snowbound and I thought, it might be days before they get out? But somehow, I think they won’t mind that.

I had wondered for a while if it were possible to paint a picture of the night? And this is my first go.

Not an actual, but based on a sketch which I did a while ago, along the Old Coach Road.

And I really enjoyed doing this.

Lynne Frost painting Towards Mungrisdale

Towards Mungrisdale
Image 32cm x 32cm
Framed 60cm x 60cm
Acrylic
SOLD

The road to Hesket Newmarket from the A66 is full of interest at every twist and turn, demanding the driver’s careful attention. And especially across that unusual flat prairie alongside Carrock Fell, where suicidal sheep and rabbits roam freely across the road.

I went there on a “plein air” painting day with Penrith Art Circle in December (2024) but we all froze to near-death after a couple of hours and I had produced very little sketch work before we decided to finish early.

However, I had no sooner set off back, towards Mungrisdale, when there was this celestial event taking place in front of me, So I had to stop.

That was actually Clough Head on the horizon and no sign of Helvellyn.

The River
Image 18cm x 18cm
Framed 39cm x 39cm

After many days of travel, just when we had given up all hope, we crested the shoulder of a ridge and there was the river.

Well, it was a bit like that when we explored Mungrisdale Common and looked down on the young Glenderamackin.

You do the same dog walk for week after week and then one evening, just when you were thinking about something else, this happens. And it’ll never happen again exactly like that. But you were there for that moment. Lucky me.

Red Syke painting by Lynne Frost

Red Syke
Image 33cm x 33cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm
Acrylic
SOLD

Red Syke from the Wallthwaite Road.
Looking north towards Souther Fell and Mungrisdale.
The word “syke” seems to have an unknown origin, but it is always associated with the draining of the land. In this case helping to drain the extensive bare common land above it into Trout Beck.
Such a small feature along the road, hardly noticeable as you drive past. But it has already seen places that you will probably never ever visit.

As I painted this, I happened to hear a Boo Hewerdine song. Call it coincidence.

From my eyes to the river
From the river to the sea
From the sea to the darkening clouds
From the sky back down to me

Song Time painting by Lynne Frost

Song Time
Image 33cm x 33cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm
Acrylic

All our birds and animals get up every day and have to immediately start foraging to stay alive. And then they have to also get on with courting and then nest building and then raising their young and who knows what else. And when all that has been taken care of, it is song time. They are an example to us all.

Winter Hill Embroidery llpainting by Lynne Frost

Winter Hill Embroidery ll
Image 33cm x 33cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm
Acrylic
SOLD

We often walk up Winter Hill ramp with our pal and there is a point about half way when the gradient eases a little, the view northwards opens out and the light distinctly changes. Very often that is the place where we will stop for a minute and admire the local landscape, whilst wondering where Louis has got to.. and on a murky day like today, even though the view is completely lost, the light still changes.

Matterdale Autumn painting by Lynne Frost

Matterdale Autumn
Image 33cm x 33cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm
Acrylic
SOLD

Everyone seems to agree that 2023 has been a very unusual year as far as the weather goes. So, after that strange spring heatwave and a Cumbrian wet summer, no surprise that Autumn happened suddenly hereabouts.

Of course, Gardeners Question Time were very despondent and we all have climate change on our minds and we must reach net zero (and net minus even) as soon as ever we can.

Even so, Mother Nature has been practising this for millions of years and so I am trusting that she will be able to cope until we get there. Fingers crossed as always.

Painting by Lynne Frost called The Last of the Sun, from Eycott Hill

The Last of the Sun, from Eycott Hill
Image 25cm x 25cm
Framed 51cm x 51cm
Acrylic
SOLD

Eycott Hill is a geological remnant of some importance, and thereby a complex eco-environment. So, after years and years of abuse, in the name of farming, it is now completely owned and cared for by Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Thankfully.

Although the important stuff is under your feet and all around, the eye is always drawn to the western horizon, mainly occupied by Blencathra and Carrock Fell.

painting by Lynne Frost called Solway

Solway
Image 33cm x 33cm
Framed 59cm x 59cm

I don’t know what it is about estuaries. I do like them. There is something elemental about that messy and transitory meeting place between the river and the tides. They are invariably lonely places, with big skies and ever-changing reflections. Ideal for a moody artist.

Painting by Lynne Frost called Storm across the Bay

Storm across the Bay
Image 48cm x 20cm
Framed 74cm x 46cm
Acrylic
SOLD

I have spent many happy days sitting in front of my gallery-gazebo on the promenade at Grange-over-Sands, as part of the regular “PromArt” exhibitions which the town sponsors during the summer months.

So I get to watch the Lune estuary in all its moods, both the good and the grumpy. The light is constantly changing of course and you very often clearly see the next weather front moving in like a curtain across Morecambe Bay, for better or for worse.

On this particular day, all the weather stayed on the mainland side, so we were able to observe its passage whilst we sat in the sunshine, holding our breath.
