So, you are exhausted and lost in the uplands back o’ Skiddaw and darkness is beginning to fall.

This is what you would hope to see.

The loneliest house in England, they say.

Blencathra always makes its own weather anyway.

But this is getting ridiculous!

Sharp Edge, Blencathra from Mousethwaite Coombe, a painting by Lynne Frost

Sharp Edge from Mousethwaite Col
Image 25cm x 25cm
Framed 51cm x 51cm

I know that Sharp Edge strikes a little terror into some walkers' hearts. So appropriately gothic, it seemed, today.

Allonby Chimneys, a painting by Lynne Frost

Allonby Chimneys
Image 51cm x 51cm (unframed)
Oil and Acrylic on canvas
SOLD

For me, Allonby seems to be frozen at a point in time, possibly nervous that something new came along and that it was somehow left behind, but bravely sticking to what it once did best.

And yet, it has so much to offer for nowadays in its entrancing atmosphere and situation, which anyone looking for a bit of fresh air (ideally with a dog) along its endless beach will certainly testify.

Stick with it, Allonby!

There is a fantastic huge Victorian hotel (all shuttered and decaying) at the end of the road outside town, towards Grune Point. If walls could only speak..

To the End of Summer

Heading towards Autumn, we might think it’s all over.

Only Mother Nature can do this.

And then do it again next year.

Halfway Stone Winter Hill a painting by Lynne Frost

Halfway Stone Winter Hill
Image 25cm x 25cm
Framed 52cm x 52cm
Acrylic
SOLD

The walk up to Winter Hill mast from Coal Pit Road only takes about 22 minutes, even with a wayward dog for company.

After 11 minutes, you should be able to easily spot the Halfway Stone, a large slab of gritstone which the path splits around just before a distinct rise and which offers a perfect piece of solid flat ground, on which you can enjoy standing for a moment and look out westwards to see if Snowdonia is in view today. Which it usually is.

Spring, Solway Firth

Solway Firth sometimes makes me think of a kaleidoscope.

Remember those ?

Painting of Horrocks Wood by Lynne Frost

Horrocks Wood
Image 25cm x 25cm
Framed 52cm x 52cm
Acrylic
SOLD

I can’t remember exactly when Horrocks Wood was first planted on the land formerly occupied by Horrocks Fold Farm, just below Scout Road. Perhaps twenty years ago?

The project must be the best ever investment of public funds in our local area, paying more and more dividends every year.

Painting of Longworth Clough by Lynne Frost

Down Longworth Clough
Image 25cm x 25cm
Framed 52cm x 52cm
Acrylic
SOLD

Longworth Clough is a wonderful place. It is impossible to imagine that this was a completely industrialised valley in Victorian Times, harnessing the waters of Belmont and Eagley Brooks to power machinery and feed bleachworks.

The last mill was abandoned and demolished in 1907, since when Mother Nature has taken back control completely undisturbed, indeed very carefully neglected I think, by Lancashire Wildlife Trust. Well done them.
